Rev Deb's Car

Why am I still participating in Night in a Car? I've done NIAC for 9 out of the 10 years it has existed. I no longer live in Bloomington/Normal. I'm retired. Life is good! I've experienced sleeping in my car at Trinity Lutheran Church's parking lot for Night in a Car. Ive learned those lessons. I've taught those lessons as a staff member of HSHM. And that's exactly why I do Night in a Car. Anytime it gets cold, hot, stormy...and when its beautiful outside, I think of my friends who are without shelter. If they are really fortunate, their car is their shelter or maybe they've been able to stay in a storage unit until the owners found them and kicked them out. I worked at HSHM for 5 years and heard many, many stories from those we served. I do NIAC because I want to share their stories, I want to raise awareness of the crisis of homelessness, and I want to support the very important work of HSHM. Total transparency here: I will likely sit in my car in my own driveway for a bit..then think, Why am I sitting here not sleeping when I can go sleep in my own bed just a few feet away? And my desire for comfort will win out. I can only sleep in my own bed because I haven't had the same set of circumstances as those experiencing homelessness. Ask me about that. I'd love to share what I learned from my friends I met whose temporary shelter was Home Sweet Home Ministries.
